On Behalf of | Mar 12, 2021 | DWI |

Because of your DWI, you had to pay bail and towing and impounding fees. Do the costs stop there?

American Addiction Centers explores various costs common to DWI charges. Learn how to prepare your finances and protect your financial health.

Individual fines

Depending on whether you have more DWIs on your criminal record, you may incur an individual fine. The costs of such fines vary, but budget for anywhere between $150 and $180. You may also receive a fee for your jail time, sentencing and probation. Additional fees vary wildly, such as a probation fee ranging from $200 to $1,200.

Drug and urine screenings

If you must take random urine and drug screenings as part of your probation or bail, you bear financial responsibility for testing. Much like individual fees, screening costs vary substantially, but anticipate paying more than $100.

Substance abuse treatment or educational classes

As a result of your DWI charge, you must likely take an education or a treatment class for substance abuse. Education classes may present a steep cost, but the price of treatment varies according to the specific program. For budgeting, expect to spend from $1,000 to $3,000.

Ignition interlock device

A court may require you to install an ignition interlock device on your vehicle, which measures your blood alcohol content before your car starts. Such devices often run between $500 and $1,500.

Car insurance

When your auto insurance provider finds out about your drunk driving charge, you must pay higher premiums for being a high-risk driver. How much more you pay depends on your specific provider, who could drop you as a customer altogether.

A single DUI may linger on your finances for longer than you like. Readjust your budget, and find ways to minimize everyday costs.
